“Like most Porsche customers, he wanted something that felt OEM. He wanted something that he can crank with the windows down driving 70 down the highway. So thats exactly what I gave him. The OEM uses a 3 way set of speakers. We decided to go with the Flax line on this car. We use the Flax 3 way up front and (2) Flax 8” subwoofers in a custom built down firing enclosure in the rear behind the seats. I have built enclosures in this car in the past, but wanted to take a different approach with a down firing application.
The rear enclosure was made by making 3 different templates. I made about 45 copies of the main template out of 3/4″ MDF to be the basic shape of my enclosure. I then added a baffle on the bottom and made a piece to fit flush in the front. There is 2 inches of clearance under the enclosure that moves the air out of the front through a steel pressed polished grill, surrounded by a matching carbon fiber insert. Looking from outside the vehicle, you see a basic panel which you assume is OEM. When the seats are in the upright position, they cover the Porsche logo insert. This gives an OEM appearance with the functionality of a serious bass upgrade.
For each front speaker, I made recessed adapters out of HDPE and finished them off with natural design elements to make them OEM behind the door panels. The audio was tied together with a Mosconi 6to8 DSP processor to take the OEM signal from the Bose amplifier and transfer it to our aftermarket amplifier that was stowed away under a false floor under the hood.
The sound the came from the Flax was absolutely amazing. I was most impressed with the accuracy and depth of the 8″ subwoofers. The customer got exactly what he asked for and I think we exceeded his expectations. Thanks again Focal for making it easy!” -Matt
